Tablature
Tablature (tab) is a notation system designed for string instruments, predominantly used by the guitar family. The advantage of tab is that it is easier to read as it visually maps out the strings and fret numbers to be played. The disadvantage of tab is that it does not provide any rhythmic or duration values.
Understanding How TAB Works
Section titled “Understanding How TAB Works”The horizontal lines represent all strings on the guitar with the lowest pitch string being positioned at the bottom and the the highest pitch string positioned at the top.
E (String 1)
B (String 2)
G (String 3)
D (String 4)
A (String 5)
E (String 6)
Numbers are used to indicate which fret numbers are to be pressed. The line in which the number falls on determines both the fret and string to be played. Fret numbers can typically range from 0-24 (0 = an open string, 1 = 1st fret, 2 = 2nd fret fret).
The example below illustrates single notes played in succession.
When fret numbers are stacked on top of one another this indicates that multiple notes are to be played at the same time. This is used to annotate chords and double stops.
